The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has declared the Durga Puja festival in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, a World Heritage Site. 

The recognition was given as Intangible Cultural Heritage at the 16th session of the Intergovernmental Committee of the organization on Wednesday (December 15).

This session is being held every year with the participation of hundreds of representatives from different countries, NGOs, and cultural organizations.

There is no pair of Durgotsab in this subcontinent. In almost every state of India including West Bengal, Tripura, and Assam, Bengalis gather for this festival.

This festival is celebrated in Bangladesh every year with great pomp. The West Bengal government has applied to UNESCO for international recognition of the festival this year.

After receiving recognition from UNESCO, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted expressing satisfaction for this. He said that this recognition is a source of pride and joy for every Indian. 

Durga Puja light up the best aspects of our culture and tradition. Everyone should have the experience of observing Durga Puja.
